|
Alexander Balkanski is a sixth generation circus performer following his mother – Lola Orlando Malevolti. In 1820 his great-grandfather from Italy founded Giuntini Circus. In 1879 he established stationary circuses in Samara and Moscow, later renamed to Virginia Circus. The circus was nationalized in 1916. The family moved from Odessa to Italy. Their first stop was in Varna and the performers found their mother country and settled in Bulgaria. In 1920 his uncle, the clown Charlie, founded the third circus of the family – Rex. Later it was renamed to Levski. Until the World War II it operated under the name Europe. In 1948 the circus was nationalized and the family members were appointed as state circus artists until 1989.
